the game to last. Sitting in a circle on the
floor, or'around a table, everyone puts
one chip into the "pot" in the middle of
the circle. Each player spins the dreidel
in turn, and acts according to the letter it
lands on. (If you want to be really cool,
try spinning the dreidel upside down, on
its handle!) Players are eliminated when
they run out of chips. The last player left
(or winning the most, if you want to
stop early) wins the game.
Dreidel directions in Yiddish and
English:
3 Nun = Nisht/Nothing (pass)
) Gimmel = Gantz/Get (take the
whole pot)
fl Hey = Halb/Half (take half the
pot)
NO Shin = Shtel/Put In (put a chip in
the pot)
If it's an Israeli dreidel, Pey = Pay,
of course!
Though dreidels for playing are
most commonly made of inexpensive
plastic or wood dreidels, a whole
industry of designer dreidels has "spun
off" for gift items and for collectors of
Judaica. They are available at Jewish
book and gift shops, or through mail
order catalogs such as HaMakor (The
Source for Everything Jewish).
There are intricate silver filigree
dreidels, exquisite enamelled porce-
lain dreidel "boxes" with hinged tops,
musical dreidels, leaded stained-glass
dreidels, artsy painted dreidels,
sculpted dreidels, cut crystal dreidels,
and on and on.
Collector Styles
Martin Brin bought a Waterford Crystal
dreidel five years ago and started a new
hobby. His collection now holds three-
dozen dreidels, displayed on a specially
built shelving unit in his Southfield
home.
Almost all of the dreidels were
bought as gifts by Marty's wife, Philicia,
who buys him a few every Chanukah,
and sometimes for birthdays, too.
Philicia had the display unit built as a
birthday surprise last year. "They were
in the china cabinet before, and you
couldn't really appreciate them," she
said.
Now, the dreidels are arrayed on the
shelves, along with the children's meno-
rahs.
The Brins' five children — ages 8
months ranging to 16 — know the drei-
dels are not for play. Just in case,
though, the wooden dreidels are on the
lower shelves, with the china and crystal
ones higher up, out of reach.
Included in the family's collection are
silver dreidels, wooden Winnie the Pooh
and Mickey Mouse painted dreidels, a
Lenox china dreidel, and two Gary
Rosenthal designer art dreidels of sol-
dered copper. There are three delicate,
blownglass dreidels, each with colored
liquid inside that swirls when the dreidel
is spun.
Three music box dreidels are in the
collection: a large inlaid wooden dreidel
that is turned on its stand to wind the
music, a glitter-filled snow globe that
plays Maoz Tzur and a gleaming silver-
plated dreidel that turns on its base to
the tune of "Dreidel, Dreidel."
There is a brightly colored clay drei-
del made in the millefleur technique
(used in glass paperweights), and a
wooden puzzle dreidel.
The Brins even have a dreidel-shaped
cookie jar, and a menorah with the
shammas (servant flame) candle holder
mounted atop two wooden dreidels.
The dreidels in the Brins' collection
mostly range in price from $20 to $200
and were bought at local Jewish book-
stores, through catalogs, and at
Chanukah boutique sales. One was even
won at a synagogue silent auction.
"I always look for something unusu-
al," says Philicia. "It's a fun thing to col-
lect."
