One time, Frieda
and I attended a
Michigan Cancer Foundation dinner at
Dave and Doreen's home ... This was
the forerunner of the present Barbara
Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute ...
There was exotic food all over the
house and under tents ouside ... So
many tasty selections.
But a big crowd was in the kitchen ...
where Frieda, myself and others sat at
the large kitchen table ... Dave, wearing
a chef's toque (chef's hat) and an
apron, grilled big oversized kosher hot
dogs on one stove and potato wedges
on another ... while spinning short
jokes and pulling coins out of his ear ...
in what was to the former bar mitzvah
photographer who had become an
international philanthropist, a wonder-
ful moment.
The salamis that seemed to follow
David in his various move-abouts and
so many times wound up in stories
about him, were Wilno Kosher ones
that David bought from Star Deli on
12 Mile Road and Telegraph.
Harry Neuman, co-owner with dad,
Sid Neuman, says that Star always had
to have them around just in case Dave
needed them ... "They were always the
medium-hard kind," says Harry
"David would take one with him on
the jet in his travels, and cut pieces of
salami on board to give passengers.
"On one of the first [Jewish
Federation sponsored-]Miracle
Missions to Israel, Dave, Henry
Dorfman and my dad donated 400
salamis with a Miracle Mission sticker
on each one to give out on the plane."
"For over 20 years, David used to
light up the store every time he came
in. Dave or his family came to Star
often during the week to take home
salamis, lox and tuna.
"Many times I would call him at his
office, and he would call me back the
same day — from Israel, Norway or
someplace else around the world. He
was amazing!"
Stephen Becharas recalls the first time
years back that Dave came into his
Gallery Restaurant in Bloomfield Hills.
"Almost everybody in the place
seemed to know him. Who is this guy?
I thought. Must be some kind of
celebrity. Everybody had a smile
because David greeted them.
"What energy!
