Opposite page top:
Panel members Carol
Kaczander and Dr. Gary
Faber discuss issues of
diversity.

..

ilk:

Joshua Bennett, the panel included Dr.
Gary Faber, deputy superintendent of
West Bloomfield Schools; Beth
Greenapple, Jewish educator, mother
and member of MJAC's ECHO adviso-
ry committee; and Carol Kaczander,
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit campaign associate and staff for
the Agency Executive's Task Force for
Special Needs.
Suggestions were shared on sensitivity
and tolerance, including Kaczander's rec-
ommendation to teach children to "let
each person's dignity be as important as
your own" and Faber's reminder that
much of what children learn from par-
ents comes not just from words, but
from actions and behavior.
"Don't take it for granted that some-
one else will talk about it," Greenapple
said about HIV and AIDS.
Fogelman was struck by Rabbi
Kamin's advice that kids need ample
time to talk to their parents. "He said

what all families need to do is sit down
to dinner every night," Fogelman said.
"Kids don't get enough time when you
just talk to them while driving from soc-
cer practice to piano lessons."
Lists of resources were provided,
including referral to the Anti-Defamation
League's Web site wwwadl.org , for sug-
gestions on how to talk to children abut
diversity, discrimination and prejudice.
Michelle and Steve Passon of White
Lake Township, founders in 1998 of the
Kulanu Committee, chaired the pro-
gram.
"The Valuing Diversity program is
a result of the Kulanu Committee's
decision to work to include all Jews
who wish to participate in Jewish life,"
Michelle Passon said. "It is our hope
to help adults and children become
more comfortable talking about all
issues of diversity, resulting in a more
inclusive, thoughtful and respectful
community."
