The Terebelos often work together in the kitchen.
t first, Susan Terebelo thought
it would be simple to come
Lip with one or two favorite
Friday-night dishes.
"But then I began to think about
ancestry, my mother-in-law, my kids,
what story to tell, because cooking is
always about memories of smells and
places you have been," says Susan
of Southfield.
Finally, she went back to the begin-
. nings of the family she and her hus-
band started.
"When I first began dating my hus-
. hand Bennett, he owned the Bread
Basket Deli," says Susan. "My future

mother-in-law, Ruth Blackman, had a
talent in the kitchen that could please
kings. I was quite intimidated, even
though I came back to Detroit with my
own array of recipes ranging from my
childhood and ancestry, to travels
through South America.
"Through our 15 years of marriage,
I have experimented and incorporat-
ed some of my mother-in-law's recipes
and my own mother's, along with my
own favorite flavors.
Susan adds, though, that preparing
family recipes yourself never seems
quite the same because they carry
"those memories of the smells in the
