their agency for Michigan," said Marx.
Said Fischer Newman, "Fred is a
constant booster of the companies he
represents and maintains the contacts
necessary ro ensure that he can get to
the right people on their behalf. He
operates with a high degree of integri-
ty as well as being an engaging, upbeat
and unfailingly positive influence on
all with whom he comes in contact.
"When Northwest was looking for
outside help, we wanted someone who
we believed could help guide us in
Michigan. Marx Layne has done all
that, and more." Newman is the
Detroit-based vice president for gov-
ernmental law and civic affairs at
Northwest.
Another factor in Marx Layne's
steady growth was the firm's self-
reliance.
They never had or needed the big
affiliations or partnerships so eagerly
sought after by other agencies. "We

didn't need their money. We never
needed to go to the bank. If we need-
ed something, Michael and I just
financed it personally. We managed
our supply and demand," said Marx.
As a result of their fourth move
since their founding, the agency is the
signature tenant of their Northwestern
Highway office building in
Farmington Hills — their name is on
the building. Typical of Marx's devo-
tion to long-range planning is his
arrangement to insure the agency has
space for growth over the next 20
years. They currently lease 16,000
square feet, although not all of it is
occupied.
Yet Marx is concerned about the
future because "there hasn't been a
transition. None of our kids is inter-
ested (in agency work). We have no
relatives working here. So we've struc-
tured the agency like a law firm," said
Marx. There are three partners, co-
founders Marx and Layne, and Don
Tanner, who has been with the firm
for six years and was elevated from
vice president in November. Jeffrey
Schultz is the sole vice president, and
on the next level are three account
supervisors; Matt Friedman, Mike .
Szudarek and David Bassett.
They are followed by seven senior
account executives; Bob Miller, Julie
Geiger, Heather Blasko, Robyn Gorell,
Steve Lipsen, David Donovan and
Leslie Kollin, who round out the man-
agement structure.
Does Marx enjoy what he does?
"I've never had so much fun. I work
long hours, but if it were work, it
wouldn't be appealing," he said.D
