his was very special in two
ways," Daphna Ruby said
about witnessing the dedica-
tion of the Davidson Institute
for Science Education. The school is
located on the campus of the Weizmann
Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel.
A gift from philanthropist William
Davidson made the facility possible but
there was more. "First, Bill Davidson did
such a magnanimous thing for the
Institute and for the benefit of science
education," said Dr. Ruby, national vice
president and Michigan regional director
of the American Committee for the
Weizmann Institute of Science. But
also, in a time when Israel needed friends
to be there, the people [at Weizmann]
were so appreciative that we did not can-
cel our trip and that we came," she said.
Twenty members of the Detroit Jewish
community were present at the dedica-
tion.
Davidson, president and CEO of
Guardian Industries Corporation in
Auburn Hills, donated $20 million to
the Weizmann Institute for the establish-
ment of the center. "Today and in the
future, Israel's greatest national resource
is the knowledge and creativity of its
people," he said.
"I am hopeful that this
Institute of Science Education
will serve as a catalyst for the best
minds in Israel to come together
to take science teaching to new
levels of excellence. What's devel-
oped at the institute should help
maintain Israel's leadership in the
scientific world and contribute to
the education of students in
other countries as well."
