Local Shabbat services
to stress unity with Israel
and build interest in
unity mission.

weekend of advocacy activities
for Israel, in advance of a January
unity mission to Israel, will be
launched with a Solidarity Shabbat at
local synagogues on Dec. 1 2.
With the support of the Michigan
Board of Rabbis and the Council of
Orthodox Rabbis, congregational leaders
will speak and lead in prayers for peace.
This will mark a prelude to Israel Action
Day on Sunday, Dec. 3, at Hillel Day
School of Metropolitan Detroit in
Farmington Hills, where the community
will hear speak-
ers and take part
in activities on
Israel's behalf
The event will
take place from
1:30 to 4 p.m.
On Shabbat,
rabbis and guest
speakers also will
encourage their
congregants to
Rabbi Nevins
take part in the
Michigan Unity
Mission to Israel Jan. 14 - 19. It is spon-
sored by the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit and the Jewish
News, in cooperation with congregations
and organizations throughout the state.
Rabbi Daniel Nevins, president of
the Michigan Board of Rabbis, said the
board supports the weekend of solidarity
"because in times of crisis for Israel,
when Israel's welfare is in jeopardy, we
must unite in efforts to ensure her well
being. According to the Talmud, kawl
Yisrael aravim zeh bazeh — all Jews are
responsible for each other. Solidarity
Shabbat is an opportunity for the Jews
of Detroit to affirm on a profound level
their connection to our brothers and sis-
ters in Israel."
Rabbi Elimelech Goldberg, a mem-
ber of the presidium of the Council of
Orthodox Rabbis (Vaad Harabonim),
said both prayer and action are required
when there is danger to the Jewish peo-
ple. "We urge all Jews in our communi-
ty and across the world to unite, and we
beseech our Father in heaven for protec-
tion and strength against our adversaries.
At the same time, we must remember
