With the support of the Michigan Board of Rabbis and the Council of Orthodox Rabbis, congregational leaders will speak and lead in prayers for peace. This will mark a prelude to Israel Action Day on Sunday, Dec. 3, at Hillel Day School of Metropolitan Detroit in Farmington Hills, where the community will hear speak- ers and take part in activities on Israel's behalf The event will take place from 1:30 to 4 p.m. On Shabbat, rabbis and guest speakers also will encourage their congregants to Rabbi Nevins take part in the Michigan Unity Mission to Israel Jan. 14 - 19. It is spon- sored by the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and the Jewish News, in cooperation with congregations and organizations throughout the state. Rabbi Daniel Nevins, president of the Michigan Board of Rabbis, said the board supports the weekend of solidarity "because in times of crisis for Israel, when Israel's welfare is in jeopardy, we must unite in efforts to ensure her well being. According to the Talmud, kawl Yisrael aravim zeh bazeh — all Jews are responsible for each other. Solidarity Shabbat is an opportunity for the Jews of Detroit to affirm on a profound level their connection to our brothers and sis- ters in Israel." Rabbi Elimelech Goldberg, a mem- ber of the presidium of the Council of Orthodox Rabbis (Vaad Harabonim), said both prayer and action are required when there is danger to the Jewish peo- ple.
