Enrollment Rises

London/JTA — The number of chil-
dren attending Jewish day schools in
Britain increased by more than 50 per-
cent during the 1990s, according to
new research by the Board of Deputies,
British Jewry's central body.
The board also reported that the
number of schools grew from 96 in
1992 to 134 in 2000. The board plans
to publish a fuller analysis in the spring.

Lift Advisory,
Israel Urges

Tel Aviv/JTA — Israel's Tourism
Ministry said it asked the United States
to lift its travel advisory warning U.S.
citizens not to travel to Israel while the
violence is going on.
Tourism Minister Amnon Lipkin-
Shahak made the request in a telephone
call to U.S. Ambassador Martin Indyk,
a ministry spokeswoman said Tuesday.
"We don't think the situation in
Israel is so bad and dangerous to
tourists," she said.

Ban Book,
Says Knesset

Tel Aviv/JTA — Israel's Knesset
Education Committee called on the
Education Ministry to ban a contro-
versial modern history book that
critics say ignores seminal events in
the history of Israel, including the
Holocaust, Zionism and the found-
ing of the state.
The ministry's director general said
she would create a team to examine
the complaints and suggest correc-
tions.

Barak To Form
Unity Coalition

Jerusalem/JTA — Israeli Prime
Minister Ehud Barak is again trying to
form a national unity government.
Barak spoke with leaders of the oppo-
sition Likud, National Religious Party,
Shas, Yisrael B'Aliyah and Shinui par-
ties. Israel Radio quoted sources close
to the prime minister as saying that
Barak is not engaged in a political ploy
to gain more time for his beleaguered
government.
