Addresses
Day School Teachers

Sharon Weiss, a behavioral consultant
from northern Virginia, was guest
speaker Nov. 14 at the Agency for
Jewish Education's annual day-school
conference held at Yeshivat Akiva in
Southfield.
Weiss, who has co-authored and is
featured in the video Managing
Oppositional Youth, specializes in the
nuts and bolts of effective teaching
and parenting, said Anita Naftaly,
director of special education for the
Agency for Jewish Education of
Metropolitan Detroit.
"What she said had a tremendous
amount of relevance to daily classroom
issues," Naftaly said. "She gave real
help about how to survive in the class-
room with kids who have behavioral
issues, to help the children as well as
the teachers."
AJE's Opening the Doors program
coordinated this fourth annual day-
school conference. Attending were
teachers from Akiva, Hillel Day
School of Metropolitan Detroit,
Yeshivas Darchei Torah, Yeshivah Beth
Yehudah School for Boys and Bais
Menachem Academy.
Support for this year's conference
came from the Jay M. and Dorothy S.
Rosenthal Teacher Institute at Hillel
Day School.
Weiss gave a similar presentation to
parents.
She also has co-authored a book on
effective parenting called From Chaos

to Calm: Effective Parenting of
Challenging Children, to be published
in May 2001.
