Flaisher realizes the major roads
haven't kept up with modern times,
but explained that a committee from
West Bloomfield, Farmington Hills,
the county and state has been studying
a road-widening plan for five years. He
wants to speed up its decisions, and
foresees widening Maple Road from
Orchard Lake Road to Haggerty in
West Bloomfield — and even beyond
through Walled Lake and Commerce
to the eventual Haggerty Connector.
Also slated for widening are parts of 14
Mile Road and Orchard Lake Road.
"The problem is that there's $25 mil-
lion available for all of those projects,
but the cost may be more like $80 mil-
lion," Flaisher said. "Also, I oppose
widening if it will pollute some of our
26 lakes" — more lakes than in any U.S.
township, except one in Minnesota.
Other successful Jewish candidates in
West Bloomfield races were incum-
bents Judith Holtz and Ruth Keller
joining Maxine Brickner on the six-
member Library Board, and Gerald
Sukenic (Democrat) and incumbent
Laurie Buchman and Judy Share-Vine
(Republicans) on the seven-member
Parks & Recreation Commission.
Sukenic, a newcomer, garnered the
most votes, 16,364, for the four-year
term, which pays $85 per meeting
attended.
Stuart Brickner pointed to Sen.
Joseph Lieberman's vice presidential
candidacy on the Democratic Party
ticket as a big factor in stirring up the
Jewish vote in West Bloomfield.
"I'm proud of our candidates of the
Jewish faith," Brickner said. "We demon-
strated that we can hang right in there,
and we made a strong showing."
