march of time and change.
Starring with the story of the city's
settlement and skirmishes with local
Indian tribes, the beginning chapters
contain a veritable "Who's Who" of
characters responsible for the now
familiar street names: Judge
Woodward, Governor Cass, Joseph
Campau, Mayor Pingree and many
more.
As time pro-
gresses, later
chapters intro-
duce other famil-
iar Detroit per-
sonalities: J.L.
Hudson,
Bernhard Stroh,
Albert Kahn, Ty
Cobb, Hank
Greenberg, Joe
Louis, Harry
Houdini, Jimmy
Hoffa, Walter
Reuther, John C.
Lodge and, of
course, Henry
Ford.
The book is
fairly bursting
with interesting
bits of historic trivia: the founding of
Elmwood Cemetery, Fred Sanders'
invention of the ice cream soda, the
start of the Barnum and Bailey
Circus, the price of milk in 1903.
The dark times are here, too:
cholera and flu epidemics, the Great
Depression, the publication of Ford's
anti-Semitic Dearborn Independent
newspaper, bootlegging and crime,
strikes, the 1967 riots, white flight to
the suburbs, urban blight. However,
the book ends on a note of optimism,
with the city's efforts to redevelop the
Campus Martius area and the "renais-
sance" of the downtown core.
Stadium; in the author's eyes, it
seems, the ballpark is a major-league
component of Detroit's history.
Evidently, the city's Tiger fans
agree; interest in the history book so
far has been "terrific!" says Cohen,
clearly pleased. "It's flying! My dis-
tributor said he's never seen anything
like it!"

Mr. Baseball
Heavy on local baseball history, entire
chapters are devoted to Tiger Stadium
and the new Comerica Park. Cohen
has been an avid baseball fan since his
childhood and worked as group sales
manager for the Tigers from 1983-92.
A sports and history trivia buff, he
earlier published the Baseball Bulletin
(1975-80) and was known by his pen
name, "Mr. Baseball." When Tiger
Stadium closed, Cohen produced a
three-hour audiotape of collected ball-
park memories called "Echoes of
Tiger Stadium" as well as a book, So
You Love Tiger Stadium, Too, co-writ-
ten with sports columnist Joe Falls.
Even the cover of Echoes of Detroit

out for less than a month, orders have
come in from all the big bookstores
chains, including Waldenbooks, B.
Dalton, and Barnes & Nobles.
Besides the Jewish Book Fair, Cohen
already has seven book signings
scheduled for November, including an
appearance on Thanksgiving weekend
at Waldenbooks in Madison Heights.
Cohen has received several sugges-
tions to place the book in the Detroit
Public Schools system, with corn-
ments that the easy reading style, the
index, and of course, all the pho-
tographs, will make the book especial-
ly appealing to students.
Born in Detroit 58 years ago,
Cohen is a member of the Jewish
Historical Society of Michigan and is
known locally for his slide shows of
"old Jewish Detroit." Of his "many,
many hours of research" for his latest
book, he says, "I learned so much!"
He hopes his readers will, too. ❑
