"He who saves one life is considered
to have saved the entire world."
HELP MAGEN DAVID ADOM
says, because children with special
needs are as much a part of the
real world as other children.
JARC's School Inclusion Program
was meant to end that sense of iso-
lation. Twelve families expressed
immediate interest.
Today, 15 are enrolled.
Accommodating Students
A lot of research and referral was
needed before the new program got
off the ground.
A key question: could any age child
participate?
Abilities Center in West Bloomfield.
It is a therapeutic center that pro-
vides assistance with individual
assessment and consultation and
prescribes therapy.
"One student we had, for exam-
ple, had a neurological problem that
made it difficult for him to concen-
trate," Hojda says. "The Abilities
Center suggested the teacher allow
the boy to sit on an inflated cushion
which lets him move around in place
a lot more [than a regular chair],
and then he can focus. His teacher
was so amazed she wants to order

In addition to her work at the preschool, Blimie volunteers with the Friendship
Circle, caring for a girl with Down's syndrome each Shabbat afternoon.
JARC wasn't interested in excluding
anyone; the families with special
needs had had enough of that. So
the program was opened to all
dren, from preschool age to high
school.
A second question: could children
go to any Jewish day school or
preschool in metro Detroit? Yes,
JARC quickly decided, provided the
school would work with the organi-
zation by accepting supportive ser-
i vices and classroom "shadows"
(aides who He students with spe-
cial needs).
A next question: how to maximize
. the abilities of each student?
ARC decided to work with the
another 22 for all the students."

ter recommended that a child with
an extremely short attention span be
allowed to leave the room from
time to time.

whose mother wanted him to spend
at least some time at Yeshiva Beth
Yehudah. The boy has limited men-

ficult for the students to know how
to interact. But it became easier,
