11 it took was one
phone call to set
the sewing machine
wheels in motion
for the 2000 election year's
newest sell-out creation.
'A customer called asking
if we had a Gore-Lieberman
kippah [head covering]," says
Alicia Nelson of Southfield, a
seller of Judaica through
her company Tradition!
Tradition! and partner-
ship in the Internet
company, All Things
Jewish.
Not currently stock-
ing such an item,
Nelson, an experienced
and enterprising busi-
nesswoman, knew a
good idea when she
heard one. Replying to
the caller, "Not yet," she
promptly contacted
Sandra Greenberg of Oak
Park, her graphics designer,
and got her working on
designing the custom kippah.
"I have worked on a variety
of art projects for Alicia,"
explains Greenberg, who
designs Nelson's company
brochures, newsletters and let-
terhead stationery. "But this
was really exciting, because
everybody is so involved in
politics and the political race
right now."
Greenberg created a six-
inch, blue suede kippah that
has a red-and-white imprint
of a variation of the official
Gore-Lieberman campaign
logo. Some small alterations
include the addition of a sixth
point on the existing star.
"We placed an order to
have 60 dozen
made," Nelson
says of the item,
which is now
available from
Tradition!
Tradition! and
on the All
Things Jewish
Web site. Each
kippah sells for
$18.
"We got in

the first week," says Susan
Meisel Levin, Nelson's assis-
tant director of distribution
and purchasing. "They began
selling off the shelf. We sold
them in two days."
Now that first 40 dozen
have now been sold, Nelson
says she expects to order more
in addition to the 20 dozen
on back order. "Every time we
click on the [All Things
Jewish] site, the numbers have
changed," she says. Orders via
the Internet have come from
as far away as Australia and
England.
Other companies are also
distributing kippot, Nelson
says, but those she has seen
have only the Lieberman
name or are printed with bub-
ble-paint on satin. "Ours look
really great — really classy,"
Levin adds.
"We are also going to carry
a Bush-Cheney kippah
because of an overwhelming
response," Nelson says of
Greenberg's newest design.
"They are for people who
have asked us — 'What about
the Republican Jews?'"
