A
local family that has
supported Jewish
education and the
Jewish Federation's
Annual Campaign for many
years has created a challenge
fund to enable every Campaign
donor to support Jewish educa-
tion as one of the community's
top priorities for 2001.
Announcement of the cre-
ation of the Schostak Family
Challenge Fund was made at
an "Ignition 2001" gathering
of the Campaign leadership
team.
Speaking on behalf of the
Schostak family, Jerry Schostak
explained that every donor who
increases his or her gift to
Federation's Annual Campaign
over last year's contribution will
see that increase doubled by the
challenge fund. And every new
gift will be matched in its
entirety. The matching contri-
butions from the challenge
fund will be directed to Jewish
education.
An early supporter of Hillel
Day School of Metropolitan
Detroit, Jerry Schostak has seen
six children in his family gradu-
ate — or about to graduate —
from Hillel. One of them —
Robert Schostak — is a former
president of the school. The
Schostak graridchildren likewise
attend Hillel and Akiva day
schools.
The family also has assisted
with efforts to start a Jewish
day high school, which came to
fruition with the opening of
the new Jewish Academy of
Metropolitan Detroit in West
Bloomfield. They established
the Schostak Family
Millennium Fund to help
make tuition more affordable
for families who send their
children to the Academy.
"Our family recognizes that
the survival of our people
requires knowledgeable Jews
who understand and appreciate
their heritage," said Jerry
Schostak. "For more than 100
years, our community has built
fine institutions and introduced
services and programs that help
people of all ages. But without
Jewish education, there is no
Jewish future."
This is the sixth year of the
Campaign Challenge Fund,
which has prompted many
donors to increase their
Campaign gifts.
