Hillel Day School Fund
Advances Shoah Education

The Walter Cykiert Memorial
Holocaust Education Fund has been
established at Hillel Day School of
Metropolitan Detroit in Farmington
Hills.
The fund is in loving memory of
past Hillel parent and grandparent
Walter Cykiert by his wife, Shirley
Cykiert of Commerce Township and
her sons, Stuart of West Bloomfield,
Jay of Farmington Hills and Dr.
Andrew, also of Farmington Hills. The
purpose of the fund is to provide chal-
lenging educational experiences for the
students of Hillel Day School on the
topic of the Holocaust. Walter Cykiert
was a survivor of the Warsaw Ghetto
and one of the earliest supporters of
Hillel Day School.
The creation of a Holocaust-educa-
tion endowment has been a long-
standing goal for the school and a per-
sonal one for Dr. Mark Smiley, head-
master and a Holocaust survivor.
"This endowment is especially mean-
ingful, as it shows the Hillel commu-
nity that Holocaust education will

always be a priority at the school,"
said Dr. Smiley.
The Goldman-Hermelin Education
Foundation has received the following
scholarship endowments in recent
months: the Phyllis Falbaum
Scholarship Fund, established by Berl
Falbaum in honor of his wife and her
years of service as an educator at
Hillel; the Anaruth and Dr. Henri
Bernard Scholarship Fund, established
by the Bernard children (all alumni of
Hillel) and their spouses in honor of
their parents' 40th wedding anniver-
sary; the Rube Weiss Memorial
Scholarship Fund, established by the
children of Rube Weiss in his memory.
In 1989, Martin Goldman and
Doreen and former Ambassador
David Hermelin established the
Goldman-Hermelin Education
Foundation to ensure the future of
Jewish education, scholarship and pro-
gramming at Hillel Day School.
For information regarding endow-
ments at Hillel, contact Marianne
Milgrom Bloomberg, (248) 851-6950.
