Jewish Home," which was specifically
designed for young adults. Approxi-
mately 45 young adults attended the
class, taught by Harlene Appelman
and Judah Isaacs. The class received
such a fantastic response, we are plan-
ning another SAJE course this year.
Last year's course was followed by a
Shabbat Dinner Exchange, where 60
young adults in the community had
the option to either host or be a guest
at Shabbat dinner. Due to the over-
whelming success, we organized two
more dinners last year and have a
fourth planned for Nov. 10. The com-
mittee will continue to sponsor Shab-
bat Dinner Exchanges three to four
times a year.
Other events last year included a
Holocaust program we co-sponsored
with Hillel of Metropolitan Detroit,
in which 90 participants watched the
film The Last Days and listened to
Holocaust survivor Erna Gorman
share her story; and "Rabbis, Milk
and Honey: Shavuot YAD Style,"
where Rabbi Michael Moskowitz of
Temple Shir Shalom and Rabbi Steven
Weil, then with Young Israel of Oak
Park, conducted a presentation about
the holiday of Shavuot — 40 young
adults attended.
This year, 60 people attended our
first event of the 2000-2001 program-
ming year: "3M: Mysticism, Medita-
tion and Munchies" to hear Rabbi
Dannel Schwartz of Temple Shir
Shalom speak about Jewish mysticism
and meditation.
It is apparent through the strong
participation in these events that the
thirst for Jewish knowledge and expe-
rience does not end once one finishes
Sunday school; there is an overwhelm-
ing interest in our young adult corn-
munity to continue to have Jewish
programming that is both educational
and exciting. The committee and pro-
fessional leadership at Federation
(Lauren Dworkin, Josh Cohen and
Rebecca Rosen, especially) have done
an exceptional job at rising to the
challenge of organizing events that
make Jewish learning exciting, mean-
ingful and ongoing for all ages. How-
ever, we are always in need of new and
fresh ideas to promote Jewish educa-
tion and culture. If you are a young
adult or a communal leader or educa-
tor and want to help, we welcome
your insight at the YAD office.

Sperber's GM
Plays Vital Role
I would like to thank Danny Raskin
and the Jewish News for the wonderful
article about our carryout at the
Whole Foods Market ("Worldwide
Cuisine," Sept. 15, page 120).
The article inadvertently omitted
one very important person who is a
vital part of Sperber's and has devoted
so much of her time and energy to
our organization. The planning and
execution of Gourmet Delights took
months of effort and could not have
been accomplished without the
knowledge and creativity of my gener-
al manager, Mimi Markofsky.
Mimi has been instrumental in
putting together Gourmet Delights
from Day One and is actively
involved in menu development and
actual food preparation. In fact, her
recipes are some of our bestsellers and
Mimi herself can be seen working
behind the counter every Wednesday
evening. I would like to publicly
thank Mimi for her never-ending ded-
ication and loyalty to Sperber's as well
as [thanking] all of my staff, who have
worked so hard to create a whole new
kosher carryout for the Detroit Jewish
community.
