He is survived by his sons Joseph and
David Newman; brothers and sisters-in-
law, Louis and Fay Newman of
Bloomfield Hills, Mitchell and Jean
Newman; grandchildren, Alexa, Max
and Jason Newman. He was the hus-
band of the late Peggy Newman; broth-
er of the late Arthur, Harry and Carl
Newman.
Services were held in San Francisco.
IRVING ROSENBAUM, 75, of
Southfield, died Sept. 18. He left Cass
Technical High School in his senior year
to enlist in the army. By 1944, he was
in action as an
infantry rifleman, a
forward scout and a
volunteer comman-
do with the 328th
Infantry Regiment,
26th Infantry
Division in France,
Germany,
Luxembourg,
Irving Rosenbaum
Belgium, Austria
and Czechoslovakia
with Patton's Third
Army, earning four battle stars. Because
he was fluent in Yiddish and "broken"
German, he was sometimes called upon
to interpret when German officers were
interrogated.
Mr. Rosenbaum was a graduate of
the Workmen's Circle Jewish School,
Wayne University, University of
Michigan Graduate School and Wayne
State University Law school. He was a
co-founder and president for 39 years of
Davis Iron Works, Inc. He also served
as a director and officer of the Michigan
Metal Fabricators Association, a mem-
ber of the regional advisory board of the
American Institute of Steel
Construction, a trustee of the Joint
Apprenticeship Committee of the oper-
ating Engineers Union and a chairman
of the steel division of the construction
industry for the United Fund.
He retired in 1984 at age 59 to
attend law school full time.
Subsequently he worked part time as a
research attorney and a brief writer at
the State Appellate Defender office,
appealing the sentences of indigent
criminal defendants in cases that were
before the trial courts, the court of
appeals and the state supreme court
until 1999.
He is survived by his wife of 52
years, Charlotte Brown Rosenbaum of
Southfield; brother and sister-in-law, Dr.
Manuel and Regine Rosenbaum of Oak
park; sister-in-law, Lee Brown Golding
of West Bloomfield; sons and daughters-
in-law, Barry and Linda Rosenbaum of
West Bloomfield, Stephen Rosenbaum
and Aileen Alfandary of Berkeley, Calif.;
daughter and son-in-law, Susan
Rosenbaum and Tom Collicott of
Seattle; grandchildren, Neil and Brian
Rosenbaum of West Bloomfield, David,
Marc and Natalie Rosenbaum-
Alfandary of Berkeley, Alex and Ian
Collicott of Seattle.

MAX J. SCHAFER, 82, of Palm Beach
Gardens, Fla., died Sept. 20. Mr.
Schafer graduated from Wayne State
University at age 19 with a bachelor of
science degree in chemical engineering.
He became a major in the U.S. Army
with an ordnance and intelligence group
during World War II and retired as a
colonel. He was a 33rd degree Mason, a
Shriner, a member of Perfection Mosaic
Lodge F & AM and a member of B'nai
B'rith and Temple Israel. He was a resi-
dential and commercial builder with his
partners Lou Roth and Martin Kellman.
He is survived by his wife of over 20
years, Marion Schafer; sons and daugh-
ters-in-law, Stuart Schafer of St. Clair
Shores, Gary and Tammy Gaspas of
Westland, Jerry and Shaun Gaspas of
West Bloomfield; daughters and sons-
in-law, Cathy Schafer and Dan
Paulbniacki of New Jersey, Sharon and
Ronald Goldenberg of Huntington
Woods; grandchildren, April and Jamie
Schafer, Julie and Gary Somberg, Jill
Goldenberg, Jared Goldenberg, Trevor
and Tristan Gaspas; great-grandchild,
Jordyn Somberg and sister, Rose Berk of
California.
