Where the difference is most
apparent is in Kroger's kosher
store within a store."
In this kosher area, nestled in
the store's northeast corner near the
produce department, is a kosher
prepared foods and deli department.
Along with Gabila's Mushroom
Knishes — and a throng of accept-
ed kosher food brands like ACME,
Golan and Aaron's — are products
like fresh sliced cheeses, deli meats,
olives and a lox selection like few
have seen in these parts. You want
tequila, cilantro, jalapeno lox or
pastrami-smoked lox? They have it.
"It's very complete," said shopper
Stacey Mason. "They have a great
selection of all the kosher foods plus
fresh fruits and vegetables." Faye
Schreiber of Oak Park added, "It's
really exciting and it's nice they're
being so inclusive." Important to
note, too, is that the kosher foods
offered here are all strictly supervised.
Oak Park's Reuven Schwartz is
working with Kroger to ensure
kashrut. He's been involved in kosher
supervision for 20 years and sees this
as just a first for Kroger. "We built
this to multiply; we're going to
kosher-fy up to 12 other markets in
this area," said Schwartz. "You haven't
been able to get all of this in one

place. Nobody else has fresh, sliced

Harvey Fruman of Farmington
Hills was one of the grand re-opening
attendees. He, like many others sam-
pling and savoring, seemed very
impressed by the selection and set-up
of the new kosher department.
"It's a terrific kosher deli and carry-
out," said Fruman. "We're thrilled. In
addition to prepackaged foods, there's
actually a kosher butcher. It's very
convenient."
Kosher supervisor Schwartz added,
"We've redone the (kosher) concept
by offering something for everybody."
When Stacey Mason shopped in
other markets, she had trouble find-
ing specific items for Jewish obser-
vance. "Here, I can ask for a shank
bone [for Passover] and they 11 know
what it is," said Mason.
The most telling comments came
from a Farmington Hills couple at
the event who aren't Jewish. "I think
it's obviously showing the need in this
area," said Michael Isabella. Added
wife Joan, "It makes a big statement
about Kroger's commitment to their
shoppers."
