"What are you asking him for? Can't
you see he's just a kid?" ... Or the one
about the Martian who landed in
New York and went right to IBM
headquarters ... He found the
machine they used to feature on one
of those big quiz programs and said
sternly, "All right. You've had your
fling in show business. Now you're
coming home." ... And then there
was the one about this dungaree-clad
Martian landing at the Actors Studio
and mumbling, "Take me to your
leader?" ... "That's pretty good," a
director told him, "but come back
next year ... you're a little tense."
RUMOR THAT the Highland
House in Lake Orion would take over
the former Shuler's on West Maple,
north of Orchard Lake Road in West
Bloomfield, was almost true ... It
became (and still is) E.G. Nick's,
owned by Highland House folks ...
brothers Elia and Greg Nicholas and
Tony Belli.
ONE OF THE best ways to pull
yourself out of the summer doldrums
and pep up a flagging appetite was to
get out to Leo Adler's Harbor Bar,
where the menu was small but good,
the view unsurpassed and the air-con-
ditioning provided by the Detroit
River.
Leo was a short, stocky man with
curly red hair, an affable disposition
and a lovely and talented wife ...
Several years after buying the Harbor
Bar, his wife, Debbie, set about refur-
bishing and redecorating the place in
a nautical theme.
The special appeal of the Harbor
Bar was in its location ... It was built
on a dock that surrounded a small
marina on the Detroit River, at the
foot of Fairview Street.
Directly opposite was the head of
Belle Isle and during racing season,
the huge unlimited powerboats made
their turns at this point.
On a hot summer night, it was one
of the finest places in the city to go for
a cool drink while the waves slapped
at the pilings and the dock swayed
gently when the big ones cruised by.
The kitchen and dining room at
the Harbor Bar were under the capa- -
ble direction of Wyn and Harold
Landis ... and out of their tiny
kitchen came such wonders as the
Commodore Special, a superb eight-
ounce hamburger.
Harold and Wyn also served a dilly
of a tenderloin filet, chops and some
tasty pancakes, eggs and assorted
sandwiches ... But their cheese
blintzes were the specialty of the
house. El
