"It was a personal mis-
sion of mine to further
contemporary dance as an
art form. My husband
[Gregory Gallick] was
training as an orthopedic
surgeon at the time, and
our compromise was to
live in New Jersey, which
was a very fertile profes-
sional ground for me and
gave me a chance to grow
as an artist."
Dorfman's initial sup-
port came from the New
Jersey State Council on
the Arts, and that
endorsement inspired
other support, including
funds from the Geraldine R. Dodge
Foundation. An active board of
trustees makes inroads into corporate
donations from sponsors such as
Prudential and Bell Atlantic.
Don Jay Smith, president of
Wordsmith Communications Group
of New Jersey, has been a longtime
board member and helped establish
the business workings of the troupe.
"I got involved 16 years ago when
a client asked if I would serve on an
advisory committee," Smith recalls.
"I've always loved dance and found a
wonderful company that did not
have a clear marketing vision and
identity. I created a marketing cam-
paign and logo, and I think they are
in a wonderful position today with
an excellent business office."
Joel Dorfman, of Bloomfield Hills,
who manages his family's invest-
ments, also is a trustee for his sister's
company and has been devoted to her
dance interests since she was a young
student preparing for recitals.
"I'm very proud of Carolyn's pro-
gression," Joel Dorfman
says. "I've watched how she's
been able to bring her love
for dance into other people's
lives, even teaching dance to
college basketball players to
help them develop athletic
abilities. I know my interest
in dance would be much less
developed if it weren't for her.
"I think she does good
work in making young peo-
ple better, and I hope dance
professionals who see her
performances here will be
motivated to emulate what
she's doing in New Jersey"
Dorfman's troupe last
appeared in Detroit in
1991, when they performed
"Cries of the Children," the
