CEO of Detroit Public Schools, and
Mayor Dennis Archer to let them
know I will help promote this idea. I
know Central is having a 50th reunion
and Mumford a 40th reunion. They
could be offering scholarship money
or assistance to the students. This
would be a great idea to promote to
these groups to help the kids today. I
have already suggested it to one person
from each group, but media could
help encourage our community to
bridge the gap the Detroit riots creat-
ed 33 years ago."
Also via e-mail ... from Adrienne
Weiss ... in Pittsburgh ... "I grew up
in Southfield and am an alumnus of
Southfield High School, class of '71,
and was wondering about any infor-
mation regarding next summer's
reunion — if any. I plan on coming
to Detroit for the 300th birthday of
the City of Detroit to see the
Freedom Festival on the Detroit
River. I imagine it will be more spec-
tacular than ever."
(So far, no word has come of a
Southfield High 1971 class 30-year
reunion.)

Know Dept. ... Question: Why is it
called a "hamburger" if it doesn't have
ham? ... Answer: At first glimpse, it
seems that the word "hamburger" is a
combination of the words "ham" and
"burger" ... Therefore, one naturally
assumes that a hamburger is a burger
that contains ham ... But the word
"hamburger" actually traces its roots
back to Hamburg, Germany, where
people used to eat a similar food called
the "Hamburg steak" ... Eventually,
the Hamburg steak made its way to
the United States, where people
changed its name to "hamburger." CI
