MAIL DEPT ... via e-mail from
Marcy Feldman ... about the Pasteur
Reunion for all graduates of Pasteur
Elementary School ... Sunday, Sept.
17, 2-5 p.m. ... at the school on
Stoepel in northwest Detroit.
"We formed an Alumni founda-
tion three years ago. Our Foundation
does more than just have a reunion
for ourselves. We have tutors in the
school, speak on Career Day, painted
a hallway of lockers to brighten the
school and have donated holiday din-
ners to needy families the last two
years.
"The most exciting thing yet is
that we presented 92 hard-cover.dic-
tionaries to the graduates this past
June. This was an idea born from
reading the obituary in the Jewish
News for Ada Glazer. She donated
dictionaries to the honor students at
the school named in memory of her
husband, Rabbi Benedict Glazer, in
the '50s. I was so touched by her
kindness I called our principal [Dr.
June Green-Rivers] to offer this idea.
She loved it, and said most children
do not own dictionaries in their
homes. She suggested we go to the
dollar store and buy 92 paperback
dictionaries. We did better. We got a
great price from Office Depot on
large hard-cover dictionaries. The
parents and students were thrilled
and we hope this will be an annual
tradition.
"We have also started an endow-
ment fund to raise money to provide
scholarships for college. For the last
two years at graduation I told the stu-
dents (6th graders) to come back to
Pasteur senior year to apply for a
scholarship. Hopefully, we are encour-
aging these students to strive for col-
lege, just as we did 30-40 years ago.
"I am trying to promote this idea of
helping all former elementary schools.
I've sent letters to Dr. Ken Burnley,
