ELUL - A
Adult Jewish Learning for the' . ays of Awe

Community
Outreach

According to Jewish tradition, the month of Elul - the four weeks leading
up to Rosh Hashanah - is a time for us, individually and as a community,
to engage in meaningful self-reflection and study in preparation for the

Days of Awe. To assist us on this spiritual journey, Eilu v' Eilu, the adult Jewish

lecirning project of the Michigan Conservative movement, offers adult study
opportunities on High Holiday themes, featuring day and evening classes
at various locations. All are welcome to come and learn, regardless of
affiliation, background, or Jewish study experience. For a complete schedule
of this year's Elul classes, call 248.593.3490 or e-mail eilulearn@aol.com .

Dr. Burt Fogelman is chosen to coordinate the
Detroit Jewish Initiative.

Hadassah Holds Voter Sign-up

The Greater Detroit Chapter of
Hadassah is holding a voter-registration
drive aimed at encouraging more
women and more Jews to participate in
the civic process.
"Most Americans don't realize that
nearly 35 percent of the eligible women
and 25 percent of the eligible Jews in
this country are not registered to vote,"
said Bonnie Lipton, national president
of Hadassah, the Zionist women's orga-
nization. "Hadassah is raking action
to help give these underrepresented
groups a voice."
"History shows that just a few
individuals can make a difference in
the outcome of an election," said
Elaine Sturman, Greater Detroit
Chapter president.
In 1994, U.S. Rep. Sam
Gejenson, D-Conn., was reelected

by a 21-vote margin. In 1960, one vote
per polling site could have elected
Richard Nixon rather than John F.
Kennedy to the presidency.
Hadassah chapters nationwide will
compete to register the largest number
of new voters. Winners will receive all-
expense-paid trips to Capitol Hill to
meet with their legislators.
In 1996, Hadassah's last voter registra-
tion drive brought in 5,000 new voters.

Voter registration forms will be available
at Hadassah's Ducky Derby on Sunday,
Aug. 27; at the Chapter's opening meet-
ing on Tuesday, Sept. 12; and at
Hadassah House, 5030 Orchard Lake
Road, West Bloomfield. For event details
and other information, call the Hadassah
offices, (248) 683-5030.
