The

Federation Honors
Rabbi Weiss

The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit has honored Rabbi Stephen
Weiss of Congregation Shaarey Zedek
with the 2000
Federation
Rabbinical Award.
It is given annual-
ly to a local rabbi
who has made a
significant impact
on the communi-
ty through volun-
teer and profes-
sional work.
Rabbi Stephen Weiss
Rabbi Weiss
has been an important contributor to
the planning of Federation's teen mis-
sions to Israel in 1998 and 2000. He
serves on the steering committee for the
Davidson-Hermelin Center for
Congregation Excellence, which oversees
three community-wide initiatives: JEEP,
providing Jewish learning to pre-school
teachers; Synagogue 2000, a project for
the spiritual transformation of syna-
gogue structure and culture; and the
Alliance for Jewish Education of
Metropolitan Detroit's Family
Education Initiative.
The rabbi also serves on the boards of
the American Jewish Committee, the
Jewish Academy of Metropolitan
Detroit and Israel Bonds.
Rabbi Weiss has created new oppor-
tunities for family worship and adult
study at Shaarey Zedek and served as
rabbinical adviser to the Conservative
movement's scholar-in-residence pro-
gram. He was one of the three rabbis
who organized a young couples mission
to Prague, in the Czech Republic, and to
Israel. The mission brought together
couples from Reform, Conservative and
Orthodox backgrounds and served as a
backdrop for exploring pluralism and
mutual understanding.
Rabbi Weiss came to Shaarey Zedek
three years ago from Ahavath Achim
Synagogue in Atlanta, Ga. There, he cre-
ated Jewish singles groups, led chavura
(informal fellowship) programs and
developed an adult education program.
He was a founding member of the
Atlanta Interfaith Council and served on
the Black Jewish Coalition and the
Mayor's Religious Task Force on Youth.
He and his wife, Naomi, have three
children.
As the recipient of the award, Rabbi
Weiss will attend the 2000 General
Assembly in Chicago to further his lead-
ership and community-building skills. •
