Republicans say their party would not
have won as many elections if it
weren't for Fisher leading the drive.
"He is an inspiration not just for me,
but for the entire nation," said
Mosbacher. "He has a special sparkle
that can't be emulated."
Every speaker, including Gov. John
Engler, dinner chairman Heinz
Prechter, Republican committee
chairman Rusty Hills, Lieutenant
Gov. Dick Posthumus, Secretary of
State Candice Miller and Sen.
Spencer Abraham's wife Jane
Abraham, praised Fisher for his lead-
ership, friendship, mentoring and
fund-raising skills.
Prechter explained that having a
birthday dinner celebration for Fisher
began in 1988, coinciding with a
presidential election year. Prechter
said his hope is to continue the tradi-
tion by celebrating Texas Gov. George
W. Bush's election in November as
the new president, and then for Max's
100th birthday in 2008, a celebration
of Gov. Engler as president.
Rabbi Daniel Syme of Temple
Beth El gave the invocation. "We ask
that you grant health and strength to
those who have been represented on
the dais, and most especially a hero of
my childhood days, my friend of
adult years, Max Fisher, 92 years
young, a role model of courage and
conviction to all of us."
Fisher sat next to Gov. Bush at the
dinner. Addressing the crowd, Bush
said, "Our lives are touched by know-
ing Max Fisher."
Some of the people spotted in the
crowd included Marjorie Fisher, Julie
and Peter Cummings, Jill Syme,
Harold Beznos, Suzie and Steve
Mitchell, Cheryl and Barry LaKritz,
and Barbara and Levi Smith.
