ORT Dedicates
Birthplace Plaque

Former American ORT Presidents
Murray Koppelman of New York
and Paul Borman of Bloomfield
Hills, along with current President
Robert L. Sill of Cleveland, unveiled
new plaques written in Cyrillic and
English marking ORT's birthplace
in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Koppelman and Borman dedicat-
ed the plaque during the ORT pre-
congress mission to St. Petersburg in
May. (ORT is an acronym for
Organization for Educational
Resources and Technological
Training.)
The plaque reads, "In this build-
ing in 1880, the Society of
Handicraft and Agricultural Labor
was founded in the St. Petersburg
Jewish community and made a sub-
stantial contribution to the voca-
tional education of Russian youth.
This plaque is installed through the
generosity of the Koborlin Friends
USA, May 2000."
"Koborlin" is an acronym for
Koppelman, Borman and Hermelin.
The latter name represents former
U.S. Ambassador to Norway David
Hermelin of Bingham Farms, also a
former American ORT president
and president emeritus of World
ORT, who could not be present for
the ceremony.
American ORT raises funds to
support technical and technological
training for 280,000 students in
ORT schools in 60 countries around
the world.
