Dr. Forman says. "Waiting areas with
fireplaces will be created for family
members. There will be a library avail-
able for research. Complementary
medical services can improve the
patient's care and help them to get
better quicker."
These free services will include
social workers, nutritional and psychi-
atric services, massage therapy and
yoga. "Both the physical and emo-
tional needs of the patient will be
met," Dr. Forman says.

Karmanos physicians will be on-site at
the Weisberg center delivering treat-
ments and will have access to other ser-
vices. "The key to success in the future
is research in the clinical studies and lab
science in Detroit," Dr. Forman says.
The Weisberg center "will be tied
to the best and latest research avail-
able," he says. "If a certain treatment
is not available to patients in
Farmington Hills, they will be referred
to the downtown [DMC] facility."
Detroit is among the country's top
areas for bone marrow transplants, neu-
tron radiation therapy and use of the
gamma knife, he says. Neutron radia-
tion is effective in treating prostate can-
cer; the gamma knife is used for giving
large doses of radiation in treating
benign and malignant brain tumors.
The Weisberg center also will be
the new headquarters for the Sinai
Guild, a 2,000-member organization
of volunteers and fundraising services
on behalf of DMC in northwest
Detroit and Oakland County.

The $7 million project has significant
support from the Detroit Jewish com-
munity. In addition to the $2 million
gift from the Weisbergs, DMC has
pledges of $1.5 million from the estate
of Robert Grow, $500,000 from the
Sinai Guild and $250,000 from the
Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation.
Bloomfield Hills' Irving Laker,
fundraising committee chair, raised $3
million by opening his home for an
event that drew 80 patrons. Dr. Forman
diagnosed his prostate cancer three years
ago.
Calling the doctor "very understand-
ing," Laker says, "he made the experi-
ence the most rewarding medical experi-
ence I have been through. He made sure
I understood everything that was hap-
pening to me in my treatment.
"It is a heartwarming and meaning-
ful experience that I am able to sup-
port Dr. Forman in his project." ❑
