EVELYN SERITA LICHTERMAN,
78, of Southfield, died June 16. Mrs.
Lichterman was a teacher for the New
York public schools. She was a life
member of Hadassah, a past president
of the Residents Council at Menorah
House, a 1981 Hadassah Woman of
the Year in New York, a member of
the Jewish Association for Senior
Adults and head of the Youth Alivan
for her Hadassah chapter. She was also
the editor of the Rockaway Hadassah
magazine.
Mrs. Lichterman is survived by
her daughters and sons-in-law, Dr.
Sherrell Najman and Cantor Chaim
Najman of Southfield, Suzanne and
Dr. Reuven Levy of New York;
grandchildren, Yehuda and Dr.
Naomi Najman, Professor Paul
Franks and Dr. Hindy Najman,
James Licht and Dina Najman-
Licht, Cantor Danny and ViVi
Najman, Dr. Elad and Cindy Levy,
Naveh Levy, Guy Levy; four great-
grandchildren; brother, Roy
Lishansky of New York; sister and
brother-in-law, Pearl and Ed Meyers
of New York; sister-in-law, Sylvia
Lishansky of New York.

LILLIAN LIPNIK, 99, of
Southfield, died June 14.
She is survived by her sons and
daughters-in-law, Dr. Carl and
Lorelei Lipnik of Bloomfield Hills,
Dr. Morris and Lois Lipnik of
Bonita Springs, Fla.; grandchildren,
Ruth and Norman Beitner, Miriam
and Dr. Larry Prussack, Judith and
Charles Perlow, Dr. Lawrence and
Natalie Lipnik, Dr. Daniel and
Paula Lipnik, Susan and John
Bustard, Carol Viola; 19 great-
grandchildren. Mrs. Lipnik was the
beloved wife of the late Louis
Lipnik.

charity of one's choice. Interment at
Clover Hill Park. Arrangements by

DR. LEON LUCAS, 85, of Oak Park,
died June 15. He dedicated his life to
community service to
improve the health,
education, welfare and
the arts of both the
Jewish and non-Jewish
communities.
Dr. Lucas was
Congregation Beth
Shalom's first religious
school principal and
Dr. Lucas
on its school board for
21 years. He served on
the synagogue's executive committee
and chaired its cultural committee. In
1990, he and his wife, Hilda, were
recipients of the Second Century Award
of the Jewish Theological Seminary of
America for "dedicated service to the
synagogue, the community and the
Conservative movement."
Dr. Lucas received his Ph.D. in clini-
cal psychology from Columbia
University in New York. In 1950, he
was a delegate to the White House
Conference on Children and Youth.
After teaching at the University of
Nebraska, Dr. Lucas taught at Wayne
State University School of Social Work
for 33 years and chaired the casework
sequence. He was president of the
Michigan Marriage Counselors
Association and the Detroit chapter of
the National Association of Social
Work.
Dr. Lucas was an active Oak Parker
for almost 50 years. He was on the
Citizen's Advisory Board and he chaired
the city's Arts and Cultural Committee
for over a quarter century. Dr. Lucas, as
a municipal court volunteer, helped
form its probation department in 1975.
In 1985, upon his retirement from
WSU, Detroit passed a resolution hon-
oring his community service and Oak
Park declared "Dr. Leon Lucas Day."
More recently, Dr. Lucas worked to
expand the Oak Park Jewish
Community Center and he and his wife
were founders of its Institute for Retired
Professionals. In the mid-1990s, the
Lucases established an Israeli lecture
series at the JCC. In 1998, Dr. Lucas
received Jewish Apartments and
Services' Eight Over Eighty award. In
1999, the Beth Shalom Men's Club
selected him its first Man of the Year.
Dr. Lucas is survived by his wife of
53 years, Hilda Lucas; son and daugh-
ter-in-law, Jerry and Pepi Lucas of
Willowdale, Ontario; daughter and son-
in-law, Miriam and Dan Medow of
Huntington Woods; grandchildren,
Michael Medow, Jonathan Medow,
Zachary Medow, Ilana Lucas.
