The kickoff was a festive event,
attended by about 200 people ... held
in the huge Hilton Novi lobby and var-
ied areas... plus the SUNNY outdoors.
Chef Richie and Hector Gonzalez
put out a choice array of goodies for
this evening ... including fresh fruit
display, pineapple tree, black bean dip,
tortilla chips, salsas, tequila-lime
shrimp and mushroom brochette, jerk
chicken brochette, brie with raspberry
in phyllo, phyllo-filled seafood trian-
gles, carved baron of beef ... plus sweet
table filled with pies, tortes and mini-
pastries.
No weathercasters were there ...
They probably believed their own
forecast ... and ran for cover.
THOSE WHO remember the
Bagel Restaurant on Woodward and
Vernor, surely will recall Elizabeth
Eichelbaum. She, with her husband,
Martin, ran the all-night restaurant
that was regularly frequented by so
many show biz celebrities for over 20
years..
Back in 1991, while living in
Southfield, she told the Jewish News
that "One can never lose sight of one's
dreams. I was denied a proper educa-
tion when I was a young girl and it's
taken me all these years to make up
for it."
Elizabeth had received a bachelor of
fine arts degree from Wayne State
University in 1979 ... and 12 years
later, at age 81, a master's degree in art
therapy from Wayne.
When Martin passed on, around
1974, she sold the restaurant but
remained a few days a week to help
the new owner ... What was to be
temporary, turned out being 15 years.
Today, at 90, Elizabeth recently
received a doctorate in education from
the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
Her and Martin's twin sons, now
67, live in New York ... Stuart is an
artist and Edward a sex therapist ...
Their third son, Marvin, 61, owns
clothing stores in Savannah, Ga., and
their youngest, Stanley, 54, is a real
estate developer.
All were in the audience when
Elizabeth received her doctorate.
