Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish
Campus Life has named Detroiter
David Bittker an "Exemplar of
Excellence" for
guiding and
shaping Hillels
in Michigan
and for helping
create vibrant
Jewish campus
life.
He was one
of eight leaders
given the
award at the
Schusterman
Hillel interna- David Bittker
tional lay lead-
ership conference in Toronto.
"David has been a pivotal figure
in the renaissance of Jewish life,"
said Hillel International Director
and President Richard M. Joel. "The
Jewish community owes David a
debt of gratitude for his historic role
in creating a stronger Jewish future
through Hillel."
In 1990, Bittker created the first
Hillel fellowship, the Bittker Fellow,
which has promoted student leader-
ship at the international level.
As chairman of the B'nai B'rith
Hillel Commission in 1994, Bittker
spearheaded Hillel's effort to become
an independent non-profit organiza-
tion and became founding chairman
of the board of directors of Hillel:
The Foundation for Jewish Campus
Life.
Locally, Bittker has headed the
Michigan Hillel Consortium and has
been adviser an supporter to Hillel
around the state. He is at the fore-
front of efforts to create a new Hillel

facility at Michigan State University.
"David has served during the
challenging times without a desire
for public acclaim or adulation,"
Joel said. "He is a leader, a philan-
thropist and, most importantly, a
true mensch."
Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish
Campus Life is committed to cre-
atively empowering and engaging
Jewish students through its network
of 500 regional centers, campus
foundations and affiliates.
