Spirit Of
Ecumenism
This year's Dove Dinner honors all supporters
of the Ecumenical Institute.

I
t was a night to say thanks to
supporters of the Ecumenical
Institute for Jewish-Christian
. Studies and the religious unity
that it represents.
Almost 200
people attend-

ed the
co
Southfield-
based insti-
tute's seventh 2`6"
annual Dove
Dinner held
May 11 at the
Spirit of Ford
Museum in
Dearborn.
The event
served to
honor every-
one who has
worked to
build bridges of understanding
between Christians and Jews. In
both faiths, the dove marks the
moment when harmony over-
comes hostility.
David Blewett, executive
director of the 18-year-old
institute, recounted how a
Christian Holocaust memorial
service has replaced the antise-
mitic rantings of Father
Charles Coughlin at Royal
Oak's Shrine of the Little
Flower and how the interreli-
gious efforts of the Ford Motor Co.
and Ford family have displaced memo-
ries of the first Henry Ford's The
International Jew, a IfAte-filled collec-
tion of newspaper articles.
"If one looks today at the spirit of
Jewish-Christian relations in the
Detroit area, especially in light of the
past 50 years, one sees the remarkable
transformation of a community,"
Blewett said.
"In light of that, it was thought that
it was appropriate to celebrate the spirit
of the Ecumenical Institute and honor
all the Institute supporters — everyone
who continues to make the transforma-
tion of our community a reality."
Dinner chairs were Flora Tersigni of
Grosse Pointe and Susan Yorke of West
Bloomfield.
The institute grew out of a dream of
the late Rev. James Lyons, who died in
1998. Lyons family members at the
dinner included his widow Christine
and son David.
Stuart Lockman
of Birmingham
and the Rev. Dr.
Mark. Jensen of
Farmington Hills

Dinner.
