Shachar is Hebrew for "dawn".
Born in Transylvania, Yitzhaki immi-
x grated to Israel when he was 19.
1 He served for 23 years in the Israel
:Defense Forces and was discharged
in 1989 with the rank of colonel.
He then went to Bucharest to open
the first transit station for Jews of the
former Soviet Union on their way to
Israel. During his three-year tenure,
100,000 immigrants passed
i through the station.
Yitzhaki has held several positions
with the Jewish Agency for Israel and
has been in his current post since
1998. He coordinates the work of
30 Israeli emissaries in 9.5 cities in
:Ukraine and Moldova.

The Jewish Agency for Israel in Kiev
established the ensemble to strengthen
identity through song, dance and
Israeli culture. Today, the ensemble
:consists of eight dancers, three singers
and Yitzhaki. They perform before the
:Kiev Students Club, the Jewish corn-
1 muniiy and for Jewish holidays. Typi-
cally, they invite their audience to join
1 them in dance.
Ensemble members are eligible to
immigrate to Israel. Singers Victoria
Borisova and Victoria Shurikovskaya
are university graduates in music and
!active in Yonot Hashalom Youth and
Students Club in Dnepepetrovsk.
They have performed all over
Ukraine and Russia. Last year, they
[performed in Tiberias and Beit
Shean in Israel. The younger singer,
Tanya Liberman, is active in the Jew-
1 ish Agency Youth Club in Ivno-
1 Frankovsk in western Ukraine. ❑
