n the United States, Memorial Day is traditionally celebrated with
trips to the mall and festive picnics.
In Israel, memories of loved ones killed in victory are like fresh
wounds — open and aching and still painfully new. In a country of sever-
al million citizens, where more than 20,000 have died in battle, virtually

everyone has lost a family member or close friend. So there are no pic-
nics, no shopping extravaganzas.
Yom HaZikaron, Israel's Memorial Day for its fallen soldiers, is Tuesday,
May 9. The memorial day is always held one day before Yom HaAtz-
maut, Israel Independence Day.
In honor of the day, we present a collection of facts about the Israel
Defense Forces (IDF) and its many men and women who died for the
State of Israel.
