DATE AND CHERRY WINKS
1 c. granulated sugar
3/4 c. shortening
2 T. milk
1 t. vanilla
2 eggs
2 1/4 c. all-purpose flour
1 t. baking powder
1/2 t. baking soda
1/2 t. salt •

1 c. chopped pecans
1 c chopped dates
1/3 c. chopped maraschino
cherries, well drained
1 1/2 c. coarsely crushed cornflakes
cereal
15 maraschino cherries, quartered

Preheat oven to 375. Grease cookie
sheets.
In large bowl,
combine sugar,
shortening, milk,
vanilla and eggs;
beat well. Stir in
flour, baking pow-
der, baking soda,
salt, pecans, dates
and 1/3 cup
chopped cherries;
mix well. (If desired, cover with
plastic wrap and refrigerate dough
for easier handling.) Drop by
rounded teaspoonfuls into cereal;
coat thoroughly. Form into balls;
place 2 inches apart on greased
cookie sheets. Lightly press
maraschino cherry quarter into top
of each ball. Bake for 10 to 15 min-
utes or until light golden brown
Makes 60 cookies.

MRS. KAPLAN'S MOTHER'S
DATE-NUT BREAD
1 pkg. pitted dates, chopped
2 t. baking soda
2 cups boiling water
2 T. margarine or shortening or oil
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
3 c. flour, sifted
1 t. vanilla
1 c. (1/2 lb.) walnuts, chopped

Preheat oven to 350. Cut dates into
small pieces if you haven't bought
chopped dates. Place the dates in a
bowl and sprinkle the dates with bak-
ing soda. Add boiling water and allow
it to saturate the dates.
In an electric mixing bowl,,cr6.fri
the sugar with the margarine, add:
well-beaten eggs and mix thoroughly.
Add vanilla. Strain the liquid fr6iii
dates and reserve the liquid. Pour
dates into the egg mixture; add the
flour, alternating with date liquid,
Mix thoroughly after each addition.

7-UP DATE-NUT LOAF
1 c dates, chopped
7 oz. 7-Up pop
1 t. baking soda
1 c sugar
2 T. butter
1 egg
1 1/2 c. flour
1/2 c. nuts, chopped
1 t. vanilla
1 pinch salt

Bring dates and 7-Up to a boil in a
aucepan, add the baking soda and set
side to cool. Add the remaining
ngredients to the date mixture and
eat very well.
Pour the batter into a loaf pan and
ake one hour at 350. Cool and slice.

Mix in nuts. Pour into a greased loaf
pan or several mini-loaf pans for 1
hour or until a cake tester comes out
clean.

1 c pitted dates, roughly chopped
1 t. baking soda
1 c. boiling water
1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour, sifted
1/4 t salt
1/2 c. brown sugar, packed
1/2 c. walnuts, coarsely chopped
