hile 10 Yeshivat Akiva stu-
dents joined in a model
seder at the Heritage in
Southfield, 90 of their
classmates were doing the same at other
local senior facilities.
The morning of April 14 was the
third time the Southfield school had
organized the project for grades 7-12
and their teachers. Yeshivat Akiva has
run similar holiday programs at Purim,
Rosh HaShana and Chanuka.
Attending the seder at the Heritage
was Shirley Jarcaig, program coordina-
tor for the Jewish Community
Chaplaincy Program of Jewish Home
and Aging Services, based in West
Bloomfield. Jarcaig marveled at the
response of the seniors and students at the
event, saying, "It was so positive — it was
exhilarating. It is wonderful to know there is
that kind of connection with the generations."
The chaplaincy program acts as a liaison
between nine senior facilities and Yeshivat
Akiva. Jarcaig says for most seniors, the seder
provides "the only opportunity they have to
celebrate the Passover holiday."
Rabbi Karmi Gross, the school's principal,
led the seder at the Heritage, with the students'
participation. They supplied the Haggadot and
made last-minute seder plate preparations.
Jarcaig stressed the importance of remaining
connected with older generations: "As tradi-
tions are passed, we are not forgetting who we
are getting the traditions from." As far as the
school's visit, she added, "It's a
wonderful, wonderful thing when
people remember." ❑
