"It is estimated that over 50 million
people around the world actively seek
the elusive mushroom called the morel.
Across the United States, hunters stalk
through woods and fields from March
to June searching for the odd-looking
fungi with the brittle, pitted cap.
"The morel is one of the most
desirable mushrooms in terms of its
flavor and texture. We use over 4,000
pounds of morels each year at the
Golden Mushroom. Although it is
now possible to farm morels, commer-
cial cultivation of them is expensive
and difficult. For this reason, many
people hit the trails each spring in
search of the elusive mushroom.
"Morel season lasts approximately
three to four weeks. They can be
found from Georgia to the north of
Canada, from California to Maine.
Morels first appear in southern
California in February, but are more
prevalent in cooler climates come
spring. Across Iowa, Missouri, Illinois,
Indiana, Ohio and West Virginia,
morel season starts around mid-April
and lasts through the first week in
May. In Michigan and Wisconsin,
morels begin to pop up in May.
Warm, humid days of early spring are
perfect for beginning the search.
"Morels can be found almost any-
where: in fields, near wooded areas
and by streams. They are unpre-
dictable. One year they may thrive in
a given area and the next, they may
not appear there at all. Typically the
fungus grows near fallen trees under
the leaves in the rich dirt of the forest
floor. In the hardwood forest, mush-
rooms are commonly found where
aspen, maple and ash predominate.
"Don't expect to find morels easily,
especially at first. They blend into the
grass and leaves and often look like
stumps, twigs and shadows. Begin
searching on hillsides. Scanning up the
hill may help. The secret is to put a
visual picture in your mind of what a
morel looks like. Next, block out
