adie Cohn well earned the
title "matriarch," nurtur-
ing four generations of
loved ones.
"She was a good mother, a good
grandmother and a good great-
grandmother," said her son, U.S.
District Judge Avern Cohn. "She had
a strong sense of family."
Mrs. Cohn, who died April 8 at age
100, was born in Chicago July 4, 1899.
Rabbi Irwin Groner of
Congregation Shaarey Zedek, who
spoke at the funeral April 10 at Ira
Kaufman Chapel, said, "It was in the
midst of her family that one could see
the fullest expression of Sadie's heart
and spirit, because home and family
were at the center of her life. They
were her enduring commitments."
In his eulogy, Rabbi Groner
recalled Mrs. Cohn's husband, Irwin,
who died in 1984, describing him as
"totally committed to philantrophy,
to reaching out and enhancing the
quality of life for the Jewish commu-
nity and for metropolitan Detroit.
"Sadie understood and affirmed
this sense of mission that Irwin so
brilliantly expressed," said the rabbi.
