I
spectator has been a continuing interest.
"Early on, in the '60s, I was doing
some very simple geometric abstrac-
tions, acrylics on shaped canvases,"
recalls Bell, who also sculpts with glass
and bronze. "Several of my artist
friends recommended that their art
dealer take a look at the work in my
studio, which he did. [He] then
offered me a show. It was probably the
most inventive time.
"All the rules of painting and sculpt-
ing were broken, and traditional mate-
rials no longer were used. People were
beginning to use plastics, glass, resins,
sound and light — all kinds of viable
[media] — and making wonderful,
experimental work. I've always consid-
ered my work experimental, and cer-
tainly what we're going to show now
are recent investigative experiences."
Bell's lecture will delve into the
meaning of spontaneity and improvi-
sation.
"I've always been of the feeling that
the answer to where to go next in one's
studio activities was in the work done
before, but being able to see what it is
sometimes takes time," says Bell,
whose wife, Janet, is a graphic artist.
"The idea that an earlier composi-
tion may not have been successful by
whatever criteria one has at the time of
making it does not mean that the
metaphysical energy that was put into
that work was useless. It can be released
again in another form and is a matter
of figuring out what to do with it."
Bell has figured out how to display
his works at Center Galleries. They will
be in two rows, the top viewed from ear-
liest to latest left to right and the b _ ottom
row earliest to latest right to left.
"I think the pieces have healing
quality, especially when viewed in
this kind of depth," he says. "Just
like meditating is good for people,
meditating into the imagery also is
good. It's not going to cure a
toothache, but I think it will make
people feel good." ❑
