he had those two for 20 years."
Steinberg, who helped plan
Greenberg tribute events, obtained
permission from Greenberg's son
Stephen to get replicas of his dad's
bats and treasures the ones he still has
along with many other mementos.
Conrad Pearl's keepsake is a pic-
ture taken in 1983, when Greenberg
was in town to mark the retirement
of his number. Pearl had circulated a
petition to have the number retired
and was given two tickets to the
game and an invitation to meet
Greenberg in the clubhouse at a time
when women weren't allowed inside.
Pearl had brought his mother,
Sadie, a longtime Greenberg fan, and
when the slugger heard she was out-
side, he went to meet. her.
"My mother was so excited," Pearl
recalls. "At that time, she was in her
70s and followed baseball all the
time."
George Barahal is proud of hold-
ing season tickets to Tiger games and
prouder of having known Hank
Greenberg, who lunched with him at
the Jewish Community Center and
played handball with him on more
than one occasion.
"He always won," says Barahal
without any regrets.
Barahal and Greenberg were in
service at the same time, and after-
ward, Barahal began practicing psy-
chology and readily explains
Greenberg's appeal.
"He was a tough competitor and a
well-disciplined perfectionist when it
came to developing his skills," the
psychologist says. "He never was
flamboyant and always was sensitive
to others. He was secure about him-
self and his competence so he could
let his guard down."
Greenberg, dead since 1986,
remains a hero to today's youngsters,
such as Michael Coden, who is work-
ing on a research paper about the
slugger for his bar mitzvah presenta-
tion at Workmen's Circle. His paper
will be read on April 1, one of the
days on which The Life and Times of
Hank Greenberg will be shown. -
"I'm interested in baseball and
was talking to my dad (Ron Coden)
when I got the idea for the paper, "
Michael says. "it took-me two
months to complete it, and I learned
how Hank Greenberg fought in the
war and almost broke Babe Ruth's
record. I really admire him and the
way he answered the antisemitic
remarks by showing how good he •
could be in the game."

The fact that a few of the inter-
- views are obviously old is unavoid-
able in a project that has taken
more than 10 years,
But the flaws are minor league
when compared to Avi.va. Kempner's
overall product. The Life and Times
of Hank Greenberg is a triumphant
recollection for old-timers and a.rol-
licking history lesson for youngsters.
