Temple Israel rabbi
attends unveiling of
plaque in Prague.

A

s treasurer of the Michigan
IMBoard of Rabbis, Rabbi Paul
Yedwab joined other members of
the North American Board of
Rabbis for the plaque ceremony
held- last week on the Charles
Bridge in Prague.
A visitor to Prague only a year
ago, the Temple Israel spiritual
leader noted that "the main tourist
attraction there is the Charles
Bridge, and the centerpiece of that
is the statue" of
Jesus on the Cross.
The statue in
question bears a
controversial 300-
year-old Hebrew
inscription,
which "clearly
made an antise-
mitic statement,"
Rabbi Yedwab
Rabbi Paul
said. With more
Yedwab
eastern European
areas recently
open to tourism, he said this sud-
denly has become an issue --- yet
it has always been a problem.
During the ceremony that the
rabbis attended on the bridge, an
additional plaque was added to
the statue explaining its objection-
able inscription.
The new plaque "doesn't solve
anything, but it puts it into per-
spective," the rabbi said What it
does, he said, is inform visitors of
a trumped-up trial and a Jewish
merchant falsely accused of dese-
crating a cross."
Understanding that the statue
is a landmark and that the Czech
government would not be willing
to remove it altogether, Rabbi
Yedwab said he is still disturbed
that the original, disconcerting
phrasing remains. "We would love
for them to take down the
words," he said.
The rabbis' two-day convention,
normally held in New York, was
moved to the Czech Republic so
they could witness the ceremony. ❑
