Donations Sought
For Flood Victims
The Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit has opened a
mailbox for the relief of victims of
the floods in Mozambique.
Thousands of people are home-
less and endangered in the worst
flooding in 50 years in southern
Africa. After weeks of torrential
rains in Mozambique, South Africa,
Botswana and Swaziland, govern-
mental officials estimate more than
one million people are in urgent
need of food, aid and shelter.
The World Health Organization
issued a warning that hundreds of
thousands of people are now at risk
from epidemics, especially cholera
and malaria. As the water continues
to rise thousands more are at risk of
drowning. Food, water and blankets
are urgently needed.
The Jewish Federation will for-
ward donations to a major overseas
relief agency, the American Jewish
Joint Distribution Committee,
which will assist in recovery efforts
in Mozambique and southern
Africa. _ T he JDC is concentrating
first on enabling South African and
Israeli physicians to work in
Mozambique, the county hardest
hit by the flooding.
Checks may be sent to:

Federation of Metropolitan Detroit,
P.O. Box 2030, Bloomfield Hills,

Open Archives,
Pope Urged
Provocative
Purim Cards
London/JTA
The chairman of the London-based
Holocaust Educational Trust called on
Pope John Paul II to open the Vatican
archives so researchers can examine the
conduct of church leaders during the
Holocaust.
Lord Greville Janner's call followed a
Day of Pardon Mass in the Vatican dur-
ing which the pope sought forgiveness
for the church's "mistrust and hostility"
toward other faiths, but notably omitted
any specific reference to the Holocaust.
Janner welcomed the pope's "worthy
and generous gesture," but said his send-
ments must now be translated into
action.
New York/JTA — A Jewish feminist
group that sent out provocative Rosh
