Was Her Life
Marguerite Chajes, 91, former Detroiter
of Vienna Austria, died Feb. 19. She had
been an opera singer in Europe prior to
World War II.
During the war, she worked to save
Jews from Hitler. After the war, she and
Helen DeRoy made and sent hundreds
of food and clothing packages to Israel
for new immi-
grants. With the
help of several
friends, she pro-
vided 33 tuxedos
for the Jerusalem
Orchestra and a
refrigerator for
the polio hospi-
tal in Tel Aviv.

musical life in
Detroit. Dear friend Wyn Landis was
her star pupil who helped and partici-
pated in many of the musical produc-
tions. One of her proudest achievements
was the founding of the Pro Mozart
Society of Greater Detroit, which cele-
brated its 40th anniversary concert last
October. She was the recipient of the
Max Reinhardt Medal and the Mozart
Pin from the Mozarteum in Salzburg in
recognition of her efforts to promote
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's music all
aver the world.
"She was a brilliant student with an
insatiable appetite for knowledge. She
vas very proud of her heritage and loved
to tell stories about her family and all
the interesting people she had been for-
tunate enough to meet," said her grand-
daughter Lea Luger, development direc-
tor of Yad Ezra, the Oak Park-based
kosher food pantry.
She is survived by her daughter and

REBECCA "BETTY" ALLEN, 98, of
Peoria, Ariz., died Feb. 27. Mrs. Allen
vas a member of Hadassah and
Women's American ORT.
She survived by her son, Donald
Mien; daughter, Darlene Maneli of Oak
Park; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Gary and
Jill Lewis, Susan, Kerry and Kim
Maneli; four great-grandchildren. Mrs.
Allen was the beloved wife of the late
Herbert Allen; loving sister of the late
Phyllis Lewis.
Interment at Machpelah Cemetery.

LARRY ARTHUR BROOK, 58, of
Southfield, died Feb. 23. Mr. Brook was
the owner of Cadillac Luggage in
Detroit and an avid photographer.
He is survived by his son and daugh-

Ann Arbor, Amy and Ivan Katz of
Huntington Woods; grandchildren,
Molly and Noah Brook, Samantha Katz;
parents, Alfred and Evelyn Brook of
Farmington Hills; brother and sister-in-

ters and brothers-in-law, Gayann Brook

SIDNEY FEINBERG, 77, of Chicago,
died Feb. 26. He was a refrigeration
credit control manager.
Mr. Feinberg is survived by his

Jamie and Daniel Huff; son and daugh-

DR. LAWRENCE KOLTONOW, 75,
of Huntington Woods, died Feb. 24. A
psychiatrist at Arborview Hospital in
Warren for 30 years, Dr. Koltonow was
a graduate of Wayne State University
Medical School and was in the first
intern class at Sinai Hospital. He was a
