he good news is that John
Frankenheimer, the legendary
director of such Hollywood clas-
sics as The Manchurian
Candidate, Black Sunday, Seven Days in May,
Birdman of Alcatraz and The Fixer, is back on
the large screen, and in fine form.
His latest film, Reindeer Games, which opens
in area theaters today, is set in Michigan's
Upper Peninsula (but shot in Canada), where
the action centers around a crime committed

in an Indian-owned casino. Ben Affleck plays
an ex-con looking forward to a new start.
Charlize Theron plays the Detroit beauty he's
come to know through pen pal letters in
prison. But the real treat is the story, loaded —
like all of Frankenheimer's best work — with
multiple, unexpected plot twists.
While in Detroit last week, the 70-year-
old director sat down with the Jewish News
for a far-ranging interview, which touched
upon his Jewish heritage, violence in film,
politics and his incredible personal story of
the tragic events on the night his close
friend Bobby Kennedy was assassinated.
