HERBERT H. KLEIN, 88, of La Mesa,.
Calif., died Jan. 1. Mr. Klein was raised at
the Jewish Orphan Home
(JOH) in Cleveland,
Ohio, and remained a
very active alumnus,
attending every annual
reunion. He was inducted
to the JOH Alumni Hall
of Fame in July 1999. He
Herbert Klein loved to write and pub-
lished a book on death
and dying and articles on
a variety of subjects.
Mr. Klein was a member of the Detroit
community for 45 years during which
time he founded Ad-Creators, an area ad
agency which he ran for 35 years. He kept
himself in good physical condition
through swimming and weight lifting into
his 80s.
Mr. Klein is survived by his son and
daughter-in-law, Sanford and Carol Klein;
daughter and son-in-law Judith and Allen
Frank; grandchildren John, Jennifer and
Jeffrey Klein, Kelly and William Zimmer,
Garin and Scott Wagner, Can and Peter
Sawyer, Brian and Daniel Frank; great-
grandchildren Joseph, Michael and Alice
Zimmer and Morgan Wagner. He was
the beloved husband of the late May Klein.
Interment in San Diego. Contributions

Detroit in 1938, where he
attended Central High
School, class of 1940. He
was a veteran of the U.S.
Army, having served in
World War II in Iceland,
where he became a U.S.
citizen, and then in
England and France as an

interpreter on General
Eisenhower's military intelligence staff.
He founded James Crystal
Corporation/Lighting Enterprises, a light-
ing manufacturing company in 1948. Mr.
Kovacs was an active member of
Congregation B'nai Moshe for over 50
years, having served on many committees
in addition to the men's club. He was also
a member of B'nai B'rith Bloch Lodge and
Jewish War Veterans.
Mr. Kovacs is survived by his wife of
49 years, Florence Kovacs; sons and
daughter-in-law Jeffrey and Randee
Kovacs of West Bloomfield, Rick and
Nicole Kovacs of West Bloomfield;
daughters and son-in-law Shelly and
Harvey Berman of Ann Arbor, Karen
Kovacs of Washington, D.C.; grandchil-
dren Lauren, Kimmy, Jason and Jake
Kovacs, Josh and Julia Berman.
Interment at Oakview Cemetery.

PHELPS SCHIFF KURJAN 82, of
Youngstown, Ohio, died Jan. 10 in
Farmington Hills. He was the son of Saul
and Anne Kurjan. He attended Ohio State
University and graduated from
Youngstown University. His professional
career spanned more than 40 years with
the Quality Tea and Coffee Company that
was founded by his father-in-law, Louis H.
Rothman, which he shared with his broth-
er-in-law, Ronald M. Rothman. He devot-
ed many years to Temple Rodef Sholom,
where he served repeatedly in many lead-
ership roles.
He is survived by his four sons and
their wives, Kenn and Marni Kurjan of
Farmington Hills, Donn and Judy Kurjan
of Rowley, Mass., Richard and Trish
Kurjan of Highland Village, Texas, Eric
and Lisa Kurjan of Findlay, Ohio; grand-
children Aaron, Joshua, Emily, Madeline
and Anna; sister and brother-in-law
Jacqueline and Lester Levine of Hobe
Sound, Fla. He was the son of the late
Saul and Anne Kurjan; husband of the
late Elayne B. Kurjan.
Interment in Ohio.
FAY MARDELL LEONARD, of Laguna
Hills, Calif, died Dec. 30.
She is survived by her children, Jeffrey
and David Leonard of Newport Beach,
Calif., Wendy Sklar of West Bloomfield;
sisters Madeliene Weinsaft of Michigan,
Rosalie Gonek of Las Vegas; seven grand-
children. She was preceded in death by
her husband Lawrence Leonard.
Interment was in California.

ty of one's choice.
ISABELLA LEVITT, 84, of Southfield,
died Dec. 23. Mrs. Levitt was a sewing
machine operator who, because of her
expertise, sewed designer samples.
She was an Eastern Star, active with the
Jewish War Veterans, a volunteer at the
Southfield and Oak Park civic centers, a
volunteer librarian and office worker at
McDonnell Towers and worked on its
newsletter, the Scribe, was a member of
B'nai B'rith and received an honor from
Our Lady of Fatima Seniors Group.
Mrs. Levitt is survived by her son and
daughter-in-law, Ted and Jill Levitt of
Texas; daughter and son-in-law Gail and
Alan Perh-nuter of Southfield; grandchil-
dren Brian and Lucy Levitt, Lisa and Alan
Cooper, Kevin (Nicole) Bopp, Elin Bopp,
Mindy (Erik) West; great-grandchildren
