Following is a brief history of the area:
• First Temple period (c. 1,000 B.C.E.-586 B.C.E.) — Half of the tribe o
Mannaseh settles in area.
• 164 B.C.E. — During revolts against Assyrian Greeks, Judah Maccabee
defends the Jews of Golan and Bastian.
• 67-70 C.E.
Three Jewish cities — Ganda, Seleucia and Sugni -- are
fortified in revolt against the Romans. Only Gamla resists, but all of its resi-
dents are either killed or commit suicide.
• 1880s — Attempts at Jewish settlement made by early modern Zionists.
• 1898 — Turks evict Jewish residents of five settlements.
• 1948 — Syria takes Golan Heights in Israel's Independence War. Syria
allows Palestinian terrorists to infiltrate Israel from the Golan and shoot at
the farming communities around the Sea of Galilee.
• 1967 (June 10) -- Israeli troops retake Golan on last day of the Six-Day
War. The first kibbutz, Merorn Golan, is set up in July.
• 1995 — Israeli and Syrian negotia-
tors begin meeting to explore peace-
