The Best Of Everything
was something like,
"Are they crazy?
Whoever heard of
a breakfast and
lunch together on
Sunday?"
EVERY NIGHT
seemed to be
Celebrity Night at
the Penthouse Lounge on Park
Avenue, across the street from Cliff
Bell's ... One never knew who'd show
up, and perhaps get on the stage or
just sit around ... like Jack Carter,
Buddy Hackett, Eddie Fisher and oth-
ers ... When Billy Daniels came to
Detroit for the Knights of Pythias,
Detroit No. 55 "Knight to
Remember" at Masonic Temple, he
was there singing away for his old
buddy, Detroiter Herman "Turk"
Prujanski, who ran the Penthouse.
THE FORMER Indigo Lounge
on W. Seven Mile, west of
Greenfield, became The Losers, with
interesting murals on the walls ...
One was devoted to sheet music of
songs "Turk" had written ... Another

third to all the places here where
"Turk" had been host ... The Bowery,
with marquee reading, "Starring
Martha Raye"; Club Trocadero,
"Starring the Will Mastin Trio, fea-
turing Sammy Davis Jr."; Paddock
Bar, and others.
OLDER THAN the hills joke of

vaudeville comic who was in a plane
crash and awoke to find himself in a
strange place ... "Where am I?" he
asked a fellow standing beside him ...
"You're in Hell," he was informed ...
"That's my agent for you," sighed the
comic. "He's never booked me in a
good spot yet" ...
Or the one about two Americans
dining in a Parisian restaurant ... "I
think this is horse meat," said one
suspiciously ... "Oh, I don't think
so," said the other ... "I'll bet you,"
offered the first fellow ... "No,
thanks," the second refused. "I never
won a bet on a horse in my life."
AFTER HE BECAME the sole
owner of Ben & George's
Delicatessen in Livonia ... buying out
Ben Epstein after a 15-year partner-
ship ... very likable Sammy Lerman,
now living in West Bloomfield's
Pebble Creek condominiums, loved
to talk about food ... and it wasn't
only deli fare.
One time, Sammy was showing
some friends around town and insist-
ed they dine at a restaurant where he
had eaten some memorable pressed
