duck ... But he couldn't remember
where the restaurant was located ...
Over the friend's protests, Sammy
continued his quest for hours and
finally stumbled on the place ... It
was only when the orders of pressed
duck were being placed before his
guests that Sammy remembered what
had made it so memorable ... It was
the worst pressed duck he had ever
eaten!
LOVE OF GOOD Mexican food
brought businessmen and beatniks
alike to the Mexican Gardens base-
ment hideaway just off Woodward on
W. Columbia ... Mexican specialties
were spicy, but mild enough not to
frighten first-timers ... Those who
preferred to watch could choose from
the American menu ... I've always
found that the best way to enjoy
Mexican food was to let someone
who knew what's what do the order-
ing ... This was the case at Mexican
Gardens, and if none was available in
your party, customers weren't
ashamed to let the waiter help them.
DETROIT'S TOP JAZZ spot was
right in the northwest area ... Baker's
Keyboard Lounge on Livernois, near
Eight Mile, brought them all in ...
And great jazz names appeared regu-
larly, attracting jazz lovers for miles
around ... Those from out of town
who came here didn't ask, "Where's a
good jazz place?" ... Their question
was usually, "Who's at Baker's?"
IT WAS AMAZING the amount
of pancakes at Uncle John's on 49'er
Day every Wednesday (all-you-can-
eat for 49 cents) ... I remember sit-
ting at the Eight Mile Road eatery
owned by Ben Kasle ... astounded at
how much people could eat ... One
table of two men and three women
had me bleary-eyed at the amount of
buttermilk pancakes they consumed.
GENE WOO, bossman at Hoa
Kow in Oak Park ... now West
Bloomfield ... was a photography bug
and lived just back of the restaurant
... So if you wanted some good
Oriental dishes and advice on pho-
tography at the same time ... Hoa
Kow was the place to go.
CONGRATS ... to May and Dave
Fenton ... on their 50th anniversary.
BAD JOKE of Yesteryears ... Five
men were ordering breakfast in a
restaurant ... "I'll have pancakes,"
said the first ... "Hot cakes," said the
second ... "Wheat cakes," said the
third ... "Griddle cakes," said the
fourth ... "They're all synonyms,
aren't they?" asked the fifth ... "No,"
replied the waitress, "but if you want
synonym, I can give you toast." 1-1
