Student Delegates
Visit Israel

Twenty students from the Detroit area
will spend 10 days on a free trip to
Israel from Dec. 30 to Jan. 10.
As part of an effort to address the
identity crisis among American Jewry,
Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish
Campus Life, in partnership with
Birthright Israel, is bringing 3,000
students from across the United States
to Israel during winter break. Hillel's
Israel 2000 program offers Jewish col-
lege students who have never been on
a group tour to Israel the chance to
visit the country free of charge.
The following MSU students will
take part: Joshua Berris, graduate,
Franklin; Joseph Bigelman, junior,
Farmington Hills; Jamie Burnstein,
senior, West Bloomfield; Dana
Eisenberg, freshman, Farmington
Hills; Lavie Goldenberg, freshman,
Farmington Hills; Lindsay Halpern,
sophomore, Bloomfield Hills;
Michael Koffron, senior, Farmington
Hills; Matthew Leebove, junior, West
Bloomfield.
Also, Michael Liefer, junior,
Farmington Hills; Jeremy Ogusky,
graduate, Bloomfield Hills; Robert
Rose, senior, West Bloomfield; Stacy
Rothenberg, senior, Farmington
Hills; Robert Sadoff, senior,
Waterford; Heather Silecchia, fresh-
man, Bloomfield Hills; Leon
Weberman, sophomore, West
Bloomfield; Lora Weberman, senior,
West Bloomfield; Jodi Weiss, senior,
Farmington Hills; Tracy Weiss,
junior, Bloomfield Hills; and Rachel
Wright, sophomore, West
Bloomfield.
Jewish community leaders have
long believed that a visit to Israel can
provide students with a strong impe-
tus to explore and expand their
Jewish identity.
"Charles Bronfman and Michael
Steinhardt, the creators of this pro-
gram, understand that an Israel expe-
rience is an essential point in the
continuum of Jewish education," said
Hillel president and international
director Richard Joel. "The trip will
strengthen the Jewish identity of
young people and the communities
they form on campus and after grad-
uation."
During the course of their stay,
students will visit historic sites and
experience contemporary Israeli soci-
ety. They will perform community
service, meet Israeli peers and exam-
ine political and social issues.
