Teens To Help In
Program For Needy
The Michigan/Israel Connection of the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit is calling for teens who have par-
ticipated in Federation-sponsored Israel
programs to help sort toys and food for
the needy from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec.
21, at the Max M. Fisher Federation
Building in Bloomfield Township.
The program, Come Back/Give
Back, provides opportunities for teens
returning from Israel trips to become
active in community volunteer work.
During this year's Volunteer
Extravaganza, these teens will reunite
with friends from Israel trips over pizza
during the toy and food sorting.
Non-perishable food and new toys
will be distributed to food banks and
family agencies in the metro Detroit
area.
Among the agencies and organiza-
tions being assisted through Volunteer
Extravaganza are Boys and Girls
Republic, Yad Ezra, Women's Justice
Center, Orchards Children's Services,
the Jewish Community Center's Jimmy
Prentis Morris Building in Oak Park
and Children's Hospital.
The Volunteer Extravaganza is a
cooperative venture of the Federation's
Outreach and Education Department,
Young Adult Division and the
Michigan/Israel Connection.
For information, call Alaine
Waldshan, (248) 203-1486.
Workshop Focus
Is Literacy
The Detroit Jewish Coalition for
Literacy will host a volunteer workshop
10 a.m.-noon Tuesday, Nov. 30, at
Congregation B'nai David.
Three educators will guide work-
shop participants on the use of chil-
dren's books as learning devices.
Librarian Valerie Meyerson will dis-
cuss judging a child's reading level and
choosing appropriate book content.
What takes place in a child's mind as
he learns to read will be the topic of
librarian Carol Parker's session.
Retired reading consultant Esther
Mintz will lead a discussion with vol-
unteers on tutoring experiences.
The DCL is an umbrella for 21 orga-
nizational partners working to increase
the Jewish community's fight against
illiteracy by mobilizing readers, tutors
and book drive organizers.
For information, call Lauren Marcus,
(248) 642-5393.
